Prophet’s Prayer in Times of Fear: Protecting the Heart and Ward Off Harm
Fear is a natural human emotion in difficult situations, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught prayers that protect the heart and keep harm away, serving as a true refuge for every believer.
Fear arises naturally when one faces potential threats or dangers, whether from people, circumstances, or unexpected events. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught specific prayers to ward off fear and evil, ensuring the believer is under God’s protection and guidance.
One of the most famous prayers, narrated by Abdullah ibn Qais (may God be pleased with him), is:
“When he feared a people, he would say: O Allah, we place You before them and seek refuge in You from their evil.” [Abu Dawood, An-Nasa’i]
This prayer emphasizes seeking God as a protective shield against potential harm, particularly when facing enemies or direct threats, highlighting the legitimacy of prayer in moments of fear.
Other prayers that provide reassurance and remove anxiety include:
“O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will, and take it away from whom You will; You honor whom You will and humiliate whom You will. All goodness is in Your hands; You are capable of all things. O Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter, grant mercy sufficient to replace all else.”
“O Lord of the seven heavens and the Mighty Throne, You are the Manifest; nothing is above You, and You are the Hidden; nothing is beneath You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of all things You hold. You are the First; nothing came before You, and You are the Last; nothing comes after You.”
“O Allah, by Your praise, none is worthy of worship but You, the Bestower, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of Glory and Honor, O Living, O Sustainer, remove my worry and fear.”
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry, grief, incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, the burden of debt, and the overpowering of men.”
“O Allah, make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sorrow, and the alleviator of my anxiety and distress.”
“Sufficient for me is Allah for whatever concerns me; sufficient for me against those who wrong me; sufficient for me against envy and malice; sufficient for me at death and at the reckoning; in Allah alone do I trust.”
Reciting these prayers strengthens faith, reassures the heart, and protects the believer, affirming that all power and protection belong solely to God.
