Egypt and the Arab and Islamic world mourn the loss of Dr. Ahmed Omar Hashem, a distinguished member of Al-Azhar’s Council of Senior Scholars and former President of Al-Azhar University, who passed away at the age of 84 after a life dedicated to knowledge and Islamic preaching.

Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, paid tribute to the late scholar, describing him as one of the most prominent Hadith scholars of our era who devoted his life to serving the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and spreading authentic Islamic teachings.

Egypt’s Grand Mufti, Dr. Shawqi Allam, also mourned the loss, calling him “a shining lamp” and praising his valuable scholarly contributions to the Islamic library in the fields of Hadith, ethics, and Da’wah.

Minister of Awqaf, Dr. Osama Al-Azhari, described him as a man who combined “firm knowledge and righteous action,” emphasizing his role in shaping generations of scholars and preachers.

Former Grand Mufti, Dr. Ali Gomaa, referred to him as “a divine scholar of Hadith,” stressing that his entire life was devoted to teaching, preaching, and defending the Sunnah, and that the death of a true scholar is a loss that leaves a deep void in the Muslim world.

The funeral prayer was held at Al-Azhar Mosque after Dhuhr prayer before the body was laid to rest in his hometown in Sharqia Governorate, with a large attendance of scholars, students, and admirers.

May Allah have mercy on Dr. Ahmed Omar Hashem, grant him paradise, and reward him for his lifelong service to Islam.
