Ruling on Fasting the Entire Month of Sha’ban to Make Up Ramadan

The Egyptian Fatwa Authority clarified that a woman who needs to make up missed Ramadan fasts may fast the entire month of Sha’ban, as making up Ramadan is valid on a flexible schedule, with preference to complete it before the next Ramadan.

حكم صيام شهر شعبان كاملًا لقضاء رمضان

The Egyptian Fatwa Authority received a question about fasting the full month of Sha’ban for a woman who owes missed Ramadan days. They explained that making up Ramadan is an obligation with flexibility, meaning the person may perform the missed fasts at any convenient time, provided it is completed before the next Ramadan, according to the majority of scholars.

The Hanafi school allows postponing the make-up fasts until the end of life, so fasting all of Sha’ban to make up Ramadan is permissible. This was practiced by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: “I could only make up the missed days in Sha’ban,” fasting the entire month to complete missed Ramadan fasts.

The Fatwa Authority emphasized that making up Ramadan may be done any time during the year, except for prohibited days such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the three days of Tashreeq. While it is preferred to hasten the make-up to fulfill the obligation promptly, fasting the entire month of Sha’ban is fully permissible, requires no penalty, and reflects the ease Islam provides in fulfilling acts of worship.
