In its ongoing efforts to clarify Islamic rulings for everyday life, Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta confirmed that it is permissible for a husband to lead his wife in congregational prayer at home. The institution clarified that congregational prayer is valid with just two people, without requiring a third person, except for Friday prayer.

Dar Al-Ifta explained that congregational prayer is fulfilled with two or more individuals, citing the Prophet Muhammad’s saying: “Two or more constitute a congregation,” highlighting the flexibility of Islamic practice within family settings when needed.

The ruling also detailed the proper positioning of the wife during prayer, stressing that she should not stand directly parallel to her husband. Instead, she should stand slightly behind him at a reasonable distance to maintain proper prayer alignment and order.

The fatwa referenced narrations from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), indicating that women in the Prophet’s time prayed behind men, reinforcing the structured arrangement of prayer rows.

In conclusion, Dar Al-Ifta affirmed that praying in congregation at home with one’s wife is valid, while emphasizing that the most rewarding option for men remains attending congregational prayers in the mosque whenever possible.
