A question was raised to the Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta regarding rinsing the mouth after eating before prayer and whether swallowing food residue affects the validity of prayer.

Dr. Ahmed Mamdouh, Fatwa Official, explained that rinsing is not obligatory merely for eating, but recommended if food remains in the mouth to avoid swallowing it during prayer, since eating and drinking nullifies prayer by consensus.

He clarified that tiny food particles between teeth are excused and do not count as real eating, so accidentally swallowing them does not invalidate the prayer, while deliberate swallowing would.

He also noted that it is preferable to rinse the mouth after eating if one has already performed ablution, but if ablution has not been done, there is no sin. Sheikh Mohammed Abdel-Samee’ confirmed that eating or drinking after ablution does not invalidate it.

Dr. Mamdouh further explained that unnecessary actions during prayer, such as excessive movements or looking at the clock, can invalidate the prayer if frequent, while minor actions do not affect it. Determining what counts as excessive is guided by customary practice.

Summary: Rinsing the mouth after eating before prayer is recommended, accidentally swallowing food residue does not invalidate prayer, while deliberate swallowing or excessive unnecessary actions may nullify it.
