Salat Al-Istikhara is one of the great Sunnahs in Islam that Muslims perform when they face uncertainty about an important permissible matter. It is a way of asking Allah Almighty for guidance and choosing what is best in matters such as marriage, travel, work, or any decision that requires careful consideration.

What Is Salat Al-Istikhara?

Salat Al-Istikhara is a two-rak’ah prayer performed by a Muslim who seeks Allah’s guidance when unsure about a worldly matter. Through this prayer, the believer asks Allah to choose what is good for their religion, life, and future.

Istikhara is performed only for permissible matters. It is not used for obligatory actions or forbidden matters, as their rulings are already known.

When Should a Muslim Pray Istikhara?

Istikhara Before Important Decisions

A Muslim may perform Istikhara when facing a difficult choice, such as:

  • Choosing a spouse.
  • Traveling or moving to a new place.
  • Starting a job or business.
  • Making an important educational or career decision.
  • Any permissible matter where a person feels uncertain.

The Importance of Salat Al-Istikhara

Salat Al-Istikhara gives the believer peace of mind because it is based on trusting Allah and believing that Allah knows what humans do not know and chooses what is best for them.

Steps of Salat Al-Istikhara

1- Perform Wudu

The Muslim performs ablution (Wudu) as they do before any regular prayer.

2- Make the Intention

The intention for Istikhara is made in the heart, intending to pray two rak’ahs while seeking Allah’s guidance.

3- Pray Two Rak’ahs

The Muslim performs two voluntary rak’ahs and recites Al-Fatihah along with any verses or surahs from the Quran in each rak’ah.

It is recommended to avoid the prohibited prayer times, such as after Fajr, after Asr, and at the time when the sun is directly overhead.

4- Recite the Istikhara Dua

After completing the prayer and saying Salam, the Muslim recites the Istikhara supplication taught by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and mentions their specific need at the appropriate place in the dua.

Istikhara Dua in English Translation

"O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, and I seek ability by Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. For You have power while I do not, You know while I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen.

O Allah, if You know that this matter — and the person mentions their need here, such as marriage, travel, or work — is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me.

And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, then make me content with it."
