Sayyid al-Istighfar is one of the greatest prophetic supplications for seeking Allah’s forgiveness. It expresses belief in Allah’s oneness, acknowledgment of His blessings, recognition of one’s sins, and a sincere request for forgiveness.

The Full Sayyid al-Istighfar Dua

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, taught the following supplication:

“O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I uphold Your covenant and promise as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for no one forgives sins except You.”

A great virtue has been reported for this supplication. Whoever says it during the day with sincere certainty and dies before evening is promised Paradise, and whoever says it at night with sincere certainty and dies before morning is promised Paradise.

Prophetic Supplications for Seeking Forgiveness

The Prophet also taught several comprehensive supplications for asking Allah for forgiveness, including:

“O Allah, forgive me for my ignorance, my excesses in my affairs, and what You know better about me than I do. O Allah, forgive me for what I did seriously and what I did jokingly, for my mistakes and what I did deliberately, and all of that is with me.”

Another prophetic supplication says:

“O Allah, I have greatly wronged myself, and no one forgives sins except You. So grant me forgiveness from You and have mercy upon me. Indeed, You are the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

A Muslim may also say:

“O Allah, You are Pardoning and love to pardon, so pardon me.”

Another commonly used wording for seeking forgiveness is:

“I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Most Great, there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to Him.”

The Importance of Istighfar and Repentance

Seeking forgiveness is one of the greatest acts of worship through which Muslims seek Allah’s mercy and pardon. It reflects a person's acknowledgment of shortcomings and sincere return to Allah.

Sincere repentance involves abandoning the sin, regretting what was done, and resolving not to return to it. If the wrongdoing involves another person's rights, those rights should also be restored.

When Should Sayyid al-Istighfar Be Recited?

A Muslim may recite Sayyid al-Istighfar at different times during the day and night. It is particularly associated with morning and evening remembrance, while contemplating its meaning and placing sincere trust in Allah.
