When the heart feels heavy and life’s burdens tighten around the soul, there remains one open door—the door of heaven. Imam Mohamed Metwally El Shaarawi taught that true relief begins with sincere prayer and humble devotion.

He said: “When matters become difficult and your heart is weighed down with grief, renew your ablution even if you are already pure, then pray two units with calmness and focus. I swear that by the time you finish, God will have lifted your sorrow or shown you His mercy.”

The Prophet ﷺ himself, whenever faced with hardship, would turn to prayer. Prayer, El Shaarawi explained, is a direct connection to the Cause of all causes—the Almighty. Just as Prophet Zakariya prayed while standing in worship and received glad tidings from the angels, the believer’s relief comes from that same connection.

Among the key steps to relieve distress:

Frequent seeking of forgiveness (Istighfar), as stated in the Qur’an: “Ask forgiveness of your Lord; indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.”

Persistence in supplication, believing firmly in God’s response.

Abundant salawat (sending blessings upon the Prophet), for it brings serenity and removes burdens.

Recommended prayers include:

“O Allah, I hope for Your mercy, so do not leave me to myself for even the blink of an eye.”

“There is no power and no strength except through Allah, the Most High, the Great.”

El Shaarawi’s way remains a timeless message: that relief doesn’t come from complaining to people, but from bowing to the Creator with faith, patience, and a peaceful heart.
