The story of Prophet Saleh (AS) is one of the greatest stories mentioned in the Quran. It represents the eternal struggle between truth and falsehood and shows the consequences of rejecting Allah’s guidance. Allah sent Prophet Saleh (AS) to the people of Thamud to call them to worship Allah alone, abandon idol worship, and return to the path of faith. Allah supported him with a great miracle: the she-camel of Allah. However, the people of Thamud rejected the sign, harmed the she-camel, and insisted on disbelief, leading to their destruction. Meanwhile, Allah saved Prophet Saleh and those who believed with him.
Who Were the People of Thamud?
The people of Thamud were an ancient Arab tribe to whom Allah sent Prophet Saleh (AS). Saleh was one of their own people, and they knew his character before he became a prophet. They lived in Al-Hijr, an area located in the northwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Allah blessed them with strength, wealth, and advanced civilization. They carved homes into mountains and built impressive structures. Allah says: “And remember when He made you successors after ‘Aad and settled you in the land, building castles in its plains and carving houses out of the mountains.” Despite these blessings, they denied Allah’s favors and rejected His oneness.
The Call of Prophet Saleh (AS) to Worship Allah
Prophet Saleh (AS) began his mission by calling his people to worship Allah alone. Allah says: “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him.” His message included:
Abandoning Idol Worship
Saleh (AS) called his people to leave false gods and worship the Creator alone.
Seeking Forgiveness and Repentance
He encouraged them to seek Allah’s forgiveness and return to righteousness.
Being Grateful for Allah’s Blessings
He reminded them that their strength, prosperity, and civilization were gifts from Allah that required gratitude.
The Miracle of Prophet Saleh’s She-Camel
The people of Thamud demanded a sign to prove that Saleh (AS) was truly a messenger from Allah. Allah answered their request with a great miracle: the she-camel of Allah. Allah says: “There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allah, a sign for you.” Some books of interpretation mention that the she-camel appeared from a rock or mountain by Allah’s command, but the Quran itself only confirms that it was a clear sign and miracle from Allah. Allah gave the she-camel a special arrangement regarding water: “This is a she-camel; she has her share of water, and you have your share on a specified day.” The she-camel would drink from the well for one day, while the people and their animals would drink on another day. They also benefited from her abundant milk, making the miracle both a blessing and a test of their faith.
The Plot Against Allah’s She-Camel
Instead of believing in the miracle, the disbelievers among Thamud became angry with the she-camel. They feared that people would believe in Prophet Saleh’s message because of this clear sign. They agreed to kill the she-camel despite Allah’s warning not to harm it. Their decision showed their arrogance and complete rejection of the truth.
The Killing of the She-Camel and the Destruction of Thamud
According to some books of interpretation, a man named Qudar ibn Salif was among those who carried out the killing of the she-camel. He attacked and killed her after the people of Thamud had already witnessed Allah’s miracle. When Prophet Saleh (AS) warned them of Allah’s punishment, they mocked him and demanded that the punishment come quickly if he was truthful. Allah gave them three days, then His command came. Allah sent upon them: A powerful cry from the sky. A severe earthquake. A devastating punishment. Allah says: “So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their homes fallen prone.” The people of Thamud were destroyed because of their disbelief, arrogance, and rejection of Allah’s signs.
The Salvation of Prophet Saleh and the Believers
Allah saved Prophet Saleh (AS) and those who believed with him through His mercy. Allah says: “So when Our command came, We saved Saleh and those who believed with him by mercy from Us.” This confirms one of Allah’s eternal laws: the believers are saved, while the wrongdoers face the consequences of their actions.
