Many women ask about when ghusl becomes obligatory and which situations require complete ritual purification, especially due to differences between minor and major states of impurity. Dar Al-Ifta Egypt explained that there is a distinction between the two: minor impurity requires ablution (wudu), while major impurity requires ghusl in order to restore ritual purity.

The Difference Between Minor and Major Impurity

Minor Impurity

Minor impurity refers to situations that invalidate wudu only, meaning a person needs to perform ablution but does not need a complete ritual bath.

Major Impurity

Major impurity refers to conditions that require ghusl, such as janabah, menstruation, and postpartum bleeding, according to Islamic rulings.

The Six Cases When a Woman Must Perform Ghusl

Hind Hammam, a female Islamic legal advisor at Dar Al-Ifta Egypt, explained that there are six situations in which a woman must perform ghusl, including:

1- Ghusl After Janabah

Ghusl becomes obligatory after janabah resulting from marital relations. Both men and women must perform purification before certain acts of worship that require ritual purity.

2- خروج المني (Release of Semen)

A woman must perform ghusl when semen is released, whether it occurs due to marital relations or another cause, and whether it happens with sexual desire or without it. Dar Al-Ifta explained that identifying the release of semen is important because it determines whether ghusl is required.

3- Death

Another case related to ghusl is death, as a Muslim is washed after passing away. This ruling applies to both men and women.

4- Ending Menstruation

A woman must perform ghusl after menstruation ends and she confirms that purification has occurred. Purity can be recognized through: Complete dryness. Seeing the white discharge known as al-qassah al-bayda for women who experience it.

5- Ending Postpartum Bleeding (Nifas)

A woman must perform ghusl after postpartum bleeding stops, whether it ends before forty days or after completing forty days according to the preferred legal opinion.

6- Childbirth

Childbirth is also among the situations related to women’s purification rulings. According to some scholars, ghusl is required after childbirth even if postpartum bleeding does not occur.

How Can a Woman Distinguish Semen From Other Fluids?

Dar Al-Ifta explained that recognizing the difference between fluids helps determine whether ghusl is required. Characteristics of semen include: Male semen: Usually thick and white. Female semen: Usually thin and has a yellowish color. Dar Al-Ifta referenced the saying of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: “Water is only due to water.” Meaning that ghusl becomes required due to the release of semen.

The Importance of Knowing Women’s Ghusl Rulings

Understanding the rules of ghusl helps women perform acts of worship correctly, especially prayer and other acts that require ritual purity. Knowing the difference between minor and major impurity also prevents confusion regarding Islamic rulings related to women’s purification.
