Dar Al-Ifta: Verify the Qibla Before Praying
Dr. Mahmoud Shalaby, Secretary of Fatwa at Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta, explained that mistakes in determining the Qibla can happen. However, anyone residing in a place where the correct direction can easily be identified should verify it before starting the prayer.
He added that asking knowledgeable local residents is preferable, as mobile applications may not always provide accurate results.

Heba Ibrahim from the Al-Azhar Global Fatwa Center explained that if a Muslim sincerely searched for the correct Qibla—by asking others or using available tools—and later discovered the direction was incorrect, the prayer remains valid and does not need to be repeated.

If someone prayed without attempting to determine the Qibla despite having the ability to ask or verify the direction, and later discovered the mistake, the prayer should be repeated because the required effort was neglected.

For travelers or people in unfamiliar places where no reliable guidance is available, sincere personal effort (ijtihad) is sufficient. Even if they later discover they faced the wrong direction, their prayer remains valid.
