A medical consultant in internal medicine and endocrinology has advised diabetic patients observing Ramadan to prioritize hydration between iftar and suhoor, stressing that fluid balance is essential to avoid serious complications during fasting hours.
She recommended drinking plenty of water overnight and delaying suhoor as much as possible to reduce the risk of daytime hypoglycemia. Patients are also encouraged to limit sugary drinks, sweets, and excessive salt intake during iftar.
Caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea act as diuretics, increasing fluid loss and raising the risk of dehydration. This may negatively impact cellular hydration and kidney function, particularly in individuals with diabetes.
When to Monitor Blood Sugar
Patients are advised to check their blood glucose levels at midday and again one to two hours before sunset, as research indicates these periods are associated with potential drops in blood sugar. Hypoglycemia can lead to dizziness, fainting, and other serious complications, sometimes contributing to accidents shortly before iftar.
Key Dietary Recommendations
-
Do not skip either iftar or suhoor.
-
Avoid overeating at iftar.
-
Reduce fatty, sugary, and heavy starchy foods.
-
Maintain balanced meal portions to stabilize glucose levels.
Individuals with diabetes combined with heart disease or hypertension face higher complication risks and should monitor glucose closely and follow strict dietary guidance if they choose to fast.
