A recent genetic study revealed that domestic cats may help deepen understanding of human breast cancer, showing clear similarities between cancer-driving mutations in cats and those observed in humans.
The study analyzed tumors from approximately 500 pet cats across five countries in the first large-scale genetic characterization of feline tumors. Researchers examined nearly 1,000 cancer-related genes in humans, comparing healthy and tumor tissues across 13 types of cat cancers. The results indicated that some cancer-driving mutations in cats closely resemble those found in humans, particularly in feline mammary gland tumors.
The study also found that certain chemotherapy drugs were more effective in feline tumor samples with mutations in the FBXW7 gene, opening the possibility of treatments that could benefit both cats and humans.
Researchers emphasize that these findings support the "One Medicine" concept, promoting shared knowledge between human and veterinary medicine. Since cats live in the same environments as their owners, they are exposed to similar environmental factors that may contribute to cancer development, offering valuable insights into human disease.
This research marks a major advancement in feline oncology, establishing a genetic database for future studies. Experts believe this could pave the way for precision oncology in cats, paralleling current human and canine practices, with potential future benefits for treating breast cancer and other malignancies.
