Health experts have raised concerns about the impact of ultra-processed foods on the gut microbiome—the vast community of trillions of microorganisms living in our digestive system that influence immunity, metabolism, mood, and even brain health.
Melissa Lane, a nutritional epidemiologist at Deakin University, explained that greater microbial diversity in the gut enhances the body’s resilience to disturbances. A diverse microbiome has long been linked to better sleep, lower inflammation, improved metabolism, and even increased longevity.
However, emerging research suggests that ultra-processed foods may disrupt this delicate balance. One key factor is the high number of additives, particularly emulsifiers—compounds that help mix oil and water and extend shelf life. While beneficial for food texture and preservation, emulsifiers may negatively affect beneficial gut bacteria.
Experts recommend prioritizing whole, fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and legumes to support a healthier and more diverse microbiome while limiting heavily processed products.
