Every year, Muslims raise questions about combining missed Ramadan fasts with the six days of Shawwal, due to the significant reward associated with both acts of worship.

Islamic scholars and fatwa authorities have long differed on this issue. Some permit combining intentions in a single fast, allowing a person to gain reward for both obligations and voluntary fasting, while others recommend separating the two for greater clarity and completeness of worship.

One view holds that a single fast may count for either the obligatory makeup or the voluntary Shawwal fast, but not both fully, while another opinion permits combining intentions, though with varying interpretations regarding the complete reward.

Many scholars, however, emphasize that it is preferable to first complete any missed obligatory Ramadan fasts before observing the voluntary six days of Shawwal, in order to avoid scholarly disagreement and prioritize obligations.
