Dr. Mahmoud Shalabi, Secretary of Fatwa at Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta, explained that it is permissible to dedicate the reward of Quran recitation to more than one deceased person. He noted that the intention may be made before or after reading, and it is a matter of the heart, not the tongue.

He emphasized that once a person opens the Quran and intends in their heart to read for their deceased parents, relatives, or for all Muslims, the reward reaches them all fully, as Allah is Most Generous and gives without limit.

Dedicating Voluntary Prayers to the Deceased
Dr. Magdy Ashour, former advisor to the Grand Mufti, stated that scholars differed on this issue: the Maliki and Shafi’i schools did not permit it, while the Hanafi and Hanbali schools—and some Shafi’is—allowed it. The latter opinion, he added, is the one adopted for fatwa, meaning it is permissible to perform voluntary prayers and gift their reward to a deceased person.

Gifting Quran Reward to the Living
Dar Al-Ifta also received a question about gifting Quran recitation rewards to the living, responding that it is permissible as a form of supplication—by saying, “O Allah, grant the reward of this recitation to so-and-so, whether alive or deceased.”
The institution clarified that the original reward returns to the reciter, but through sincere intention and supplication, it may also benefit others.

Dar Al-Ifta concluded that gifting rewards—whether through recitation or prayer—is a virtuous and valid act of devotion that reflects love, mercy, and sincerity.
