Disposing of Cut Nails in Islam: Is Burying Them Obligatory?

Sheikh Mohamed Kamal, a Fatwa Secretary at Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta, answered a question about the proper way to dispose of nails after cutting them and whether they must be buried or can simply be thrown away.

He explained that Islam encourages cleanliness, personal hygiene and maintaining a good appearance. Trimming the nails is also one of the practices of natural disposition, or Sunnah al-Fitrah, encouraged by the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

Must Cut Nails Be Buried?

Sheikh Mohamed Kamal explained that burying cut nails is not obligatory. Some scholars have considered burying them recommended, but a Muslim does not commit a sin if they are unable to bury them.

They can instead be disposed of appropriately, such as by placing them in a bag and throwing them into a designated waste container.

Islam encourages cleanliness and beauty. Allah says in the Quran: “We have certainly honored the children of Adam.” The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, also said: “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty.”
