Al-Azhar received a question regarding the multiplication of sins in Ramadan, and clarified:
-
Multiplication of good deeds: Good deeds are multiplied in virtuous times and places, especially in Ramadan, as stated in the Qur’an: ﴿Whoever gives a good loan to Allah, He multiplies it for him many times over﴾ [Al-Baqara: 245], and ﴿Whoever brings a good deed will have ten times its like﴾ [Al-An’am: 160].
-
Multiplication of sins: Sins are also multiplied in these blessed times, but only in severity (quality), not in number, meaning the sin is weightier on the doer but the count does not increase.
-
Prophetic guidance: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Fear the month of Ramadan, for good deeds are multiplied in it more than in other times, and likewise sins,” emphasizing the gravity of committing sins during Ramadan.
Conclusion:
In Ramadan, good deeds increase both in quantity and quality, while sins increase in severity only, encouraging believers to perform righteous deeds and avoid sins during this holy month.
