People may go through difficult periods in life when worry, sadness and distress become overwhelming. At such times, turning to Allah through supplication and remembrance can bring comfort and reassurance.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, taught Muslims a number of comprehensive supplications for times of distress, anxiety and sadness. Among them is a powerful dua asking Allah to make the Quran the spring of the heart, the light of the chest, the means of removing sadness and the source of relief from worry.

Prophetic Dua for Worry, Anxiety and Sadness

Among the well-known supplications reported from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is:

“O Allah, I am Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever executed, and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the removal of my sadness and the departure of my worries.”

This supplication expresses complete submission to Allah, reliance upon Him and recognition of His wisdom and justice. It also asks Allah to fill the heart with the light and guidance of the Quran.

Supplications for Relief from Distress in the Sunnah

The Dua of Prophet Yunus

One of the greatest supplications associated with relief from distress is the dua of Prophet Yunus, peace be upon him:

“There is no deity except You; glory be to You. Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers.”

This is a powerful expression of monotheism, repentance and humility before Allah.

Dua for Protection from Worry and Sadness

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, used to seek refuge in Allah by saying:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sadness, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from the burden of debt and from being overcome by men.”

This comprehensive supplication seeks protection from both emotional and practical hardships.

Dua for Mercy and Relief

Another prophetic supplication says:

“O Allah, Your mercy is what I hope for, so do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye. Correct all of my affairs for me. There is no deity except You.”

The dua combines hope in Allah’s mercy with a request for His help in every aspect of life.

Dua for Severe Distress

Among the supplications reported for times of distress is:

“There is no deity except Allah, the Most Great, the Most Forbearing. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the Noble Throne.”

Dua to Relieve Worry and Sadness

A Muslim may turn to Allah with authentic prophetic supplications, including:

“O Allah, I ask You because all praise belongs to You. There is no deity except You, the Bestower, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer.”

Another supplication says:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from severe trials, misery, an evil decree and the rejoicing of enemies over my misfortune.”

It is also reported:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the removal of Your blessings, the loss of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment and all forms of Your displeasure.”

Another prophetic supplication includes:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from being returned to the feeblest stage of life. I seek refuge in You from the trials of this world and from the punishment of the grave.”

Seeking Forgiveness as a Means of Relief

Seeking Allah’s forgiveness is among the greatest forms of remembrance and worship. Allah says in the Quran:

“I said, ‘Ask your Lord for forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send rain upon you in abundance, and give you increase in wealth and children, and provide you with gardens and provide you with rivers.’”

Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to frequently seek forgiveness from Allah in times of difficulty as well as during all other circumstances.

Sending Blessings Upon the Prophet and Relief from Worry

Sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is also among the acts of worship mentioned in narrations concerning the relief of worries.

In a narration involving Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him, he asked the Prophet how much of his supplication he should devote to sending blessings upon him. When Ubayy said that he would devote all of his supplication to this, the Prophet said:

“Then your worries will be taken care of and your sins will be forgiven.”

Written Dua for Worry and Sadness

A Muslim may also supplicate to Allah with permissible words expressing his needs and hopes. Among such supplications is:

“O Allah, our worries have become many, and there is none but You who can remove them. Remove our worries, O Reliever of distress. There is no deity except You. Glory be to You; indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers. O Allah, suffice me against whatever concerns me. O Allah, I am weak, so strengthen me; I am in need, so provide for me, and grant me the best of affairs.”

Another supplication is:

“O Allah, suffice me against whatever worries me and whatever I do not worry about. Grant me piety, forgive my sins, guide me toward goodness wherever it may be, and make ease easy for me. Grant me relief and a way out from every matter that causes me worry or distress, whether related to this world or the Hereafter.”

A person may also say:

“O Allah, through You I seek help and upon You I rely. Make the difficulties of my affairs easy for me, make my hardships manageable, grant me all goodness and turn away every evil from me. My Lord, expand my chest and make my affairs easy for me.”
