Sheikh Amr Al-Wardani, Secretary of Fatwa at Dar Al-Ifta, explained that engagement is only a promise of marriage, not a legal contract, meaning the man and woman remain unrelated in Sharia terms. He noted that talking via video or phone is permissible only within the limits of modesty and good manners, without flirtation or emotional overtones.
Al-Wardani emphasized that a woman’s dignity and restraint increase her respect and value, while overstepping these moral limits could lead to regret and loss. He warned that inappropriate conversations may lead to sinful actions or broken trust.
Dr. Mahmoud Shalaby of Dar Al-Ifta added that communication between engaged couples is allowed under one condition — it must remain within Islamic etiquette and purpose, avoiding unnecessary long chats or emotional expressions.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Awaida Othman cautioned against excessive private conversations, pointing out that many social and moral problems have occurred due to unguarded exchanges or sharing personal images during engagement.
He advised that any communication should preferably be in the presence or knowledge of family members, ensuring respect and transparency. If both wish to speak more freely, it is better to proceed with the marriage contract to make the relationship fully lawful.
“The Sharia doesn’t aim to restrict people,” Othman concluded, “but to protect them from temptation and harm. Purity before marriage invites blessing afterward.”
