Dar Al-Ifta Egypt has received an inquiry regarding the ruling on hosting feasts for different occasions — such as expressing gratitude for blessings, weddings, childbirth, purchasing a new home, returning from travel, or recovery from illness.

The institution explained that hosting feasts (walimah) is permissible and encouraged in Islam, as it expresses gratitude to Allah and spreads joy among people. It falls under the recommended act of feeding others, which is highly valued in Islamic teachings.

Dar Al-Ifta clarified that all types of feasts are lawful, provided they avoid extravagance, waste, or any forbidden acts related to food, drink, or entertainment. Such gatherings should also include the poor alongside the rich, reflecting compassion and social harmony.

Regarding offering food during funerals, the authority stated that there is no religious objection to preparing meals for mourners who travel long distances, emphasizing that it is recommended for the neighbors or relatives of the deceased to prepare the food, citing the hadith:

“Prepare food for the family of Ja‘far, for they have been struck with a matter that has preoccupied them.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood)

In response to another question about attending Ramadan banquets (Mawa’id al-Rahman) for those not in need, Dar Al-Ifta confirmed that accepting such invitations is permissible, as responding to a Muslim’s invitation is a sign of goodwill and brotherhood, as long as the intention remains sincere.

Dar Al-Ifta concluded by urging Muslims to ensure that feasts and gatherings remain a means of gratitude and compassion, not of pride or wastefulness, thereby fulfilling the true spirit of Islamic ethics.
