Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta has issued an official clarification regarding the ruling on praying individually while a congregational prayer is in progress inside the mosque. The inquiry came from a worshiper who asked whether praying alone while others are praying in congregation is valid.

According to the fatwa, such a prayer is valid and fulfills the obligation, but the person acts improperly by not joining the congregation without a valid excuse, as this goes against the purpose of Islamic unity and communal worship.

Dar Al-Ifta emphasized that congregational prayer is among the greatest rituals of Islam, supported by authentic Hadiths highlighting its virtues. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The congregational prayer is twenty-seven times superior to the prayer offered by a person alone.”

The institution explained that when a person enters the mosque and the congregation is ongoing, they should join the group prayer, since the purpose of congregation is to strengthen unity, compassion, and cooperation among Muslims.

Prominent scholars from various Islamic schools have affirmed that while such a solitary prayer is technically valid, it remains disliked and contrary to the Sunnah, as it neglects the communal aspect of worship emphasized in Islam.

Dar Al-Ifta concluded that congregational prayer embodies the spirit of togetherness and solidarity in Islam, and although a solitary prayer during congregation is accepted, it misses the immense reward and social harmony intended by the Sharia.
