Egypt’s Dar Al-Iftaa: Donating to the Poor Is Better Than Performing Voluntary Umrah

In an official statement, Egypt’s Dar Al-Iftaa explained that assisting the poor and needy is more virtuous than performing an optional Umrah, as Islamic principles encourage prioritizing the most beneficial and impactful acts of worship.

The statement highlighted that the dearest charity to God is that which benefits people and improves their lives, citing the Prophet Muhammad’s saying: “Whoever brings joy to a believer—by feeding the hungry, relieving a debt, or easing a hardship—God will relieve him of hardships on the Day of Judgment.”

Dar Al-Iftaa also referenced the Prophet’s words: “Indeed, there is a due right in wealth other than zakat,” explaining that Islam urges generosity and compassion, especially when people are in need.

The institution affirmed that scholars have long agreed that acts of benefit to others are superior to those limited to oneself, which is why many of the early righteous predecessors preferred giving charity and supporting others over performing voluntary pilgrimages.

Citing notable scholars such as Imam Ibn Al-Arabi, Al-Jassas, and Al-Suyuti, Dar Al-Iftaa emphasized that Islamic law prioritizes feeding the hungry, freeing captives, and supporting those in distress—acts that reflect the true spirit of mercy and solidarity in Islam.

Dar Al-Iftaa concluded by reaffirming that helping the poor is among the most beloved deeds to God, and that extending aid to others embodies faith, compassion, and social responsibility more than individual acts of worship.
