Every year on this day, Egyptians remember a scholar who transcended borders and time — Sheikh Mohammed Ayad Al-Tantawi, the brilliant Al-Azhar graduate whose journey from the small villages of Egypt to the royal halls of St. Petersburg became one of the most remarkable intellectual stories in history.

Born in 1810 in Gharbia, he memorized the Qur’an early and excelled in Arabic grammar, logic, and Islamic law. His teacher, Sheikh Hassan Al-Attar, recognized his rare intellect and sent him on a scholarly mission to Russia — a bold move that marked the beginning of a new chapter for Arabic studies abroad.

After seventy days of arduous travel, Sheikh Al-Tantawi arrived in St. Petersburg, where he would spend over twenty-one years teaching Arabic and Islamic sciences. His influence extended beyond academia; he became a cultural bridge between the Arab world and Europe, earning the respect of scholars, diplomats, and students alike.

Among his most celebrated works is “Tuhfat Al-Athqiya fi Akhbar Bilad Al-Rusiya”, a masterpiece that vividly described Russian society — its customs, food, clothing, and values — giving Arab readers their first authentic look into life in 19th-century Russia.

His contributions earned him high honors from the Russian Tsar, and his reputation as a man of wisdom and humility endured long after his passing in 1861. Sheikh Al-Tantawi was laid to rest in the Volkovo Muslim Cemetery, where his gravestone still bears the inscription: “Here lies Sheikh Mohammed Ayad Al-Tantawi.”

Today, his name continues to shine in Russian universities as the pioneer who established Arabic studies there. Egypt’s Minister of Awqaf, Dr. Osama Al-Azhari, described him as a “genius who carried Al-Azhar’s message to the world,” emphasizing that his life remains an enduring example of how knowledge unites nations.
