Many people search for how to stop backbiting and gossip, as these behaviors are among the most common mistakes that affect relationships and social connections. Dr. Ali Gomaa, a member of Al-Azhar’s Council of Senior Scholars, explained that the tongue is one of the greatest blessings Allah has given to humans.

Through the tongue, a person remembers Allah, recites the Quran, encourages good deeds, and helps reconcile people. However, it can also become a reason for a person’s destruction if it is used in ways that do not please Allah.

He emphasized that guarding the tongue is one of the greatest acts of worship and one of the signs of strong faith and good Islamic character.

The Danger of Backbiting and Gossip

Ali Gomaa explained that among the most dangerous diseases of the tongue are backbiting (ghibah) and gossip (namimah).

These behaviors can separate loved ones, damage relationships, spread conflicts, and create hatred between people.

Allah Almighty warned against backbiting, saying:

“And do not backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it.”
(Surah Al-Hujurat: 12)

Backbiting harms both the person who commits it and the society around him because it destroys trust and spreads negativity among people.

How to Stop Backbiting and Gossip

Understanding the Seriousness of the Sin

Dr. Ali Gomaa explained that the first step in overcoming backbiting and gossip is recognizing how serious these actions are.

When a person does not consider a sin significant, he may easily fall into it without feeling its consequences. Understanding the harm caused by these behaviors helps a person become more careful with his words.

Reducing Unnecessary Speech

One of the most important ways to protect the tongue is reducing speech that has no benefit.

Ali Gomaa pointed out that speaking less helps a person develop wisdom and awareness. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Part of the perfection of a person’s Islam is leaving what does not concern him.”

A person controls his words while they remain inside him, but once he speaks them, he becomes responsible for their consequences.

Focusing on Self-Improvement Instead of Others’ Faults

Another effective way to avoid backbiting is to focus on correcting one’s own mistakes instead of searching for the faults of others.

A person who constantly examines himself becomes less interested in discussing people’s shortcomings and more focused on improving his own character.

The Danger of Spreading Words Between People

Ali Gomaa emphasized that transferring words between people is not a simple matter, as it can create conflicts and cause serious harm.

He explained that some scholars used educational methods when dealing with people who carried statements between others. They would ask the person who transferred the words to face the person whose statement was mentioned, allowing him to realize the damage caused by spreading such information.

These methods helped prevent disputes and taught people that words are a responsibility, and spreading conversations between people can lead to major problems.

Is It Permissible to Confront Someone Who Spreads Gossip?

Ali Gomaa explained that confronting someone who spreads gossip is not always required. The situation should be evaluated based on whether confrontation will solve the problem or increase conflict.

If addressing the issue leads to reconciliation, it may be beneficial. However, if it causes greater disagreement, avoiding confrontation and choosing a wiser approach may be better.

Conditions of Repentance From Backbiting and Gossip

Scholars have mentioned several conditions for sincere repentance from backbiting and gossip:

Feeling Genuine Regret

A person must regret committing the sin and sincerely decide not to return to it.

Seeking Allah’s Forgiveness and Praying for Others

A person should ask Allah for forgiveness and pray for the person he harmed. He should also mention that person positively in places where he previously spoke negatively about him.

A suitable prayer is:

“O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, and improve his condition.”

Repairing the Harm Caused by Gossip

If gossip caused disagreements or broken relationships, the person should try to repair the damage as much as possible without creating new conflicts.

Apologizing When It Brings Benefit

If apologizing to the person who was harmed will improve the relationship, it is encouraged.

However, if an apology may increase hostility and disputes, the person should pray for him, mention him positively, and work to correct the harm caused.

The Importance of Guarding the Tongue in Islam

Guarding the tongue is one of the greatest moral values encouraged in Islam. A person’s words can either build relationships and spread kindness or destroy trust and create conflicts.

Therefore, controlling speech, avoiding backbiting and gossip, and choosing beneficial words are important ways to protect faith, improve character, and create harmony among people.

What is the difference between backbiting and gossip?

Backbiting means mentioning something about a person that he dislikes while he is absent. Gossip means transferring words between people in a way that may cause conflict or harm.

How can I stop the habit of backbiting?

A person can overcome it by remembering its seriousness, speaking less, focusing on self-improvement, and thinking carefully before speaking.

Does repentance from backbiting require apologizing?

If apologizing will repair the relationship without causing greater harm, it is recommended. If it may increase conflict, seeking forgiveness and praying for the person may be sufficient.

Why is gossip considered a serious sin?

Because it spreads conflict, breaks relationships, and creates hostility between people.

Why is guarding the tongue important?

Because controlling speech protects a person from sins and is considered a sign of good faith and proper Islamic character.
