Can an Elderly Worshipper Skip Al-Fatihah Behind the Imam Due to Difficulty?
Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta explains the ruling on an elderly worshipper who finds it extremely difficult and exhausting to speak while praying behind the imam.
Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta received a question about an elderly man who becomes extremely exhausted when speaking and asked whether he is allowed to refrain from reciting Surah Al-Fatihah behind the imam during the silent portions of obligatory prayers.
Dar Al-Ifta explained that, as a general rule, a worshipper should recite Al-Fatihah behind the imam during the prayers or portions in which the imam recites silently. These include the Dhuhr and Asr prayers, the third rak‘ah of Maghrib, and the third and fourth rak‘ahs of Isha, provided that the worshipper is able to recite it and has no valid excuse preventing him from doing so.
However, if the worshipper is unable to recite Al-Fatihah, or reciting it causes severe difficulty and exhaustion, the imam’s recitation is sufficient for him, and his prayer remains valid.
Accordingly, an elderly man who experiences significant difficulty and exhaustion when speaking may simply follow the imam without reciting Al-Fatihah. He bears no sin or hardship for doing so, and his prayer is valid and sufficient according to this ruling.
Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah During Prayer
Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah is one of the most important acts of prayer and one of its greatest forms of remembrance. Islamic legal scholars, however, have differed over certain rulings concerning the follower’s recitation behind the imam, particularly during prayers in which the imam recites silently.
The Hanafi Position
Hanafi scholars hold that the follower should not recite Al-Fatihah behind the imam and that the imam’s recitation is sufficient on the follower’s behalf.
They cited a narration attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: “Whoever has an imam, the imam’s recitation is his recitation.”
The Maliki and Hanbali Positions
According to the relied-upon Maliki position and the Hanbali school, reciting Al-Fatihah is not obligatory for the follower, and the imam’s recitation is sufficient.
Nevertheless, they considered it recommended for the follower to recite it during prayers and portions in which the imam recites silently, including Dhuhr, Asr, the third rak‘ah of Maghrib, and the third and fourth rak‘ahs of Isha.
The Shafi‘i Position
The Shafi‘i school holds that the follower must recite Al-Fatihah during silent prayers.
This position was also adopted by some Maliki scholars, including Abu Bakr Ibn Al-Arabi, and was held by Ibn Hazm Al-Zahiri.
Is an Elderly Person’s Prayer Valid Without Reciting Al-Fatihah?
Yes. If an elderly worshipper is unable to recite Al-Fatihah, or reciting it causes severe and significant difficulty or exhaustion, he may follow the imam without reciting it, and his prayer remains valid.
This reflects the consideration given in Islamic jurisprudence to genuine inability and significant hardship. A worshipper is not required to perform an act that he genuinely cannot perform or that causes him severe hardship.
Conclusion
The ruling concerning a follower’s recitation of Al-Fatihah differs among Islamic schools of jurisprudence. However, when an elderly worshipper experiences significant difficulty and severe exhaustion while speaking, he may refrain from reciting Al-Fatihah and simply follow the imam. His prayer is valid, and he bears no sin for doing so.
