Death is the only certainty that binds all humans, yet in His mercy, Allah allows signs that remind the soul of its nearing return. Scholars and narrations mention three main divine indicators that foretell the approach of death.
1. The Death of Relatives or Neighbors –
When those close to you depart, it is a divine message whispering: Your time will come; take heed and prepare.
2. The Graying of Hair –
Each strand of white hair is a silent messenger reminding us that life is passing, and the body is fading while the soul journeys toward its Creator.
3. The Bending of the Back –
As strength weakens and the body leans, the message becomes clearer: the path to eternity has drawn near.
Ibn al-Jawzi narrated in Rawdat al-Mushtaq that the Angel of Death calls daily:
“O sons of forty, gather your provisions; O sons of fifty, the harvest is close; O sons of sixty, have you forgotten the Day of Reckoning?”
Physical signs such as prolonged sleep, loss of appetite, withdrawal from people, irregular heartbeat, and cold limbs are among the bodily changes signaling the end of life.
Yet the wise do not fear these signs — they embrace them as reminders. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Relieve us with it, O Bilal,” teaching us that prayer is comfort and preparation for the inevitable meeting with Allah.
Death is not the end — it is the beginning of eternity. Live with remembrance, act with purpose, and let your final moment be one of peace and faith.
